Arran Coastal Way

Activity

The Arran Trust was delighted to recently award £3000 to the Arran Access Trust towards the development of the Arran Coastal Way.  This fantastic project will bring the Arran Coastal Way up to the standard required to achieve Scotlands’ Great Trails accreditation (as promoted by Scottish Natural Heritage) and enable recognition as the finest circular coastal route in Scotland.  New sections of path will be created and existing sections upgraded to create a top class, 65 mile circular trail around the coast of Arran.  There will also be improved marketing and promotion of the route, which in turn the Arran Trust's seven voluntary Trustees believe will result in economic benefits across the island in terms of increased visitor numbers and expenditure.  It will also extend the tourism season, hopefully creating new jobs within the tourism sector.

Outcome

This project seeks to protect the coastal environment by improving path structure in several areas of the  Coastal Way. Where paths are waterlogged, walkers tend to stray from the path and end up creating a wide and trampled area. By improving drainage and creating new pathways, the Arran Access Trust intend to keep damage around the path to a minimum, protecting the plant and animal life that runs alongside the Coastal Way, which is in itself one of the reasons people come to walk the Coastal Way!
