ACTIVITY
Arran Community Council had coordinated a bid from village groups who had expressed an interest in utilising flower tubs which would otherwise have been removed by the local authority and potentially destroyed. The tubs were previously planted by NAC with spring bulbs and it was planned that when these bloomed the bulbs would be removed and stored for future use. The tubs would then be replanted with bedding plants and the villages would maintain these over the summer period.
The project was initially intended to help retain the annual natural flower displays and encourage village pride, whilst stopping the removal and destruction of many containers which have been purchased and maintained by the local authority staff who are unable to continue the work due to budget cuts.
OUTCOME
The Arran Trust was able to offer financial support to purchase plants which were divided up amongst the communities by Arran Community Council. Bulbs have since been replanted and the programme continues to provide flower tubs in every village, improving amenity for residents and visitors alike.
