Activity:
With support from the Arran Trust, Arran Civic Trust plan to rebuild the dry stone wall around the ruins of the Barking House at Catacoll in order to prevent further damage to the remains. This will help to conserve the ruins of the Barking House and the large tubs which were used in it so that they can be easily seen by the public.
Outcome:
The project involved re-building the dry stone walls around the Barking House. The work was carried out by a local craftsman and volunteers. The Barking House was built to cure nets and ropes for the Arran herring fishery in the 19th century, and is unique visible evidence of the fishery which existed in the north of Arran. The Barking House has already suffered considerable decay and conservation of the building has provided an important reminder of this part of Arran's heritage
for residents and visitors.
